Earth Hour tomorrow, here is a study that also hits close to home for anyone concerned with the environment--and this study has a strong link to human and animal health as well (redundant to mention since we can't have one without the other...human health and environmental health go hand-in-hand).
This new study, the first of its kind, has found that commonly used herbicides can cause bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics. The researchers point out that these chemicals have never been tested for this type of effect on bacteria.
The research team, investigated what happens various disease-causing
bacteria when they are exposed to common herbicides like Roundup, Kamba
“We found that exposure to some very common herbicides can cause bacteria to change their response to antibiotics... In most cases, we saw increased resistance even to important clinical antibiotics,” said the lead author of the study.
The effects are apparent wherever people or animals are exposed to herbicides, such as in farm animals or pollinators in rural areas, and potentially children and pets in urban areas. With GMO crops now showing that they use increasingly greater quantities of herbicides and pesticides, if it isn't clear yet, GO ORGANIC!
